Plastic Packaging Tax – 70% of affected UK businesses yet to register!

Plastic Packaging Tax (PPT) was introduced to the UK with effect from 1 April 2002.

The tax applies to all plastic packaging manufactured in, or imported into the UK that does not contain at least 30% recycled plastic and all businesses that have used more than 10 tonnes in any 12 months need to be registered.

According to a recent HMRC statement 70% of all relevant businesses have not yet taken any action to register or to account for the tax. Vigorous enforcement with a full penalty regime is likely to be introduced.
